I could not upload an image when I try to add/edit any product from Magento backend. I have tried small image and disabled turn off PHP security extension, it is still not working
I think it is caused by your media (media/catalog/product) folder permission, you should double check if the folder is writable.
Also, you can try to remove .htaccess file (backup it first) from media folder
